**Lombard Hobbies Recommendation - As modelers ourselves we highly recommend ONLY running DCC on DCC systems and DC on DC systems, regardless of 'Dual-Mode' capability. This gives optimum performance and safeguards the unit from possible damage from running on a different system than originally intended and from any inexperienced operator errors.
PROTOTYPE HISTORY
These are the hallmarks of the Union Pacific Railroad’s unique GTEL 8500 Horsepower Turbine locomotives. Often called “Big Blows” because of their deafening noise, they roamed the less populated landscape between Council Bluffs, IA and Ogden, UT. 30 three unit sets were built between 1958 and 1961 and all were retired by the early 1970s.

Union Pacific GTEL 8500 HP “Big Blow” Turbine #26
First Lombard Hobbies has been outstanding in service, price, and shipping and I highly recommend doing business with them. However I can not say the same about Scale Trains. This item cost almost $600 and arrived in poor shape. The first problem was the tender decoder was not functioning, could not program an address or get the light to work. It took me 2 hours to figure out how to access the decoder ( instructions do not tell you how to access) to test it and find it not working. Also the decoder is hardwired with no plugs requiring soldering to install a new one . I wound up installing a spare lokpilot decoder and now the tender light works. The other problem I had was with the "A" unit locomotive. It operated very jerky at slow speeds. I ran the locomotive in for 30 mins in each direction with no change. I had to disassemble clean and lubricate the engine and perform the ESU auto tune, it works better but still not perfect. For the money the locomotive should operate perfectly out of the box (Scale Trains needs a better quaulity assurance program) and I shouldn't have to spend hours fixing a new product. Cosmetically it is great but mechanically it has a lot to be desired thus the three star rating. I should have sent it back to scale trains but that would have cost me money and I would not have a locomotive back for perhaps months while they fixed it. It is going to be a while before I give my money to Scale Trains again.
