Built from 1946 to 1950, the prototypes delivered more horsepower than the earlier RS-1, and introduced the rounded body style that defined Alcos of the period. Serving a variety of railroads, shortlines and industrial operators, many were going strong into into the 1970s and beyond.

- NEW updated body with Water-cooled exhaust stack as appropriate
- Prototypes in service 1946 to early 2000s - several preserved today

- Five-pole skew-wound motor

- Helical-cut gears for quiet operation and easy multiple unit operation
- All-wheel drive and electrical pickup
