Bluford Shops N 87341 Pullman-Standard 86' Quad Door Auto Parts Boxcar Rio Grande D&RGW #63938
Rio Grande took delivery of these boxcars in July of 1966. They were also assigned for loading at the GM plant in Indianapolis on the PRR. Rio Grande had no parts or assembly plants on their lines but they were part of a bridge route between Indianapolis and assembly plants in California and were thus obliged to contribute cars to the pool.
Based on cars that first appeared in the mid-60s and are still in use in the 2020s. Unlike general service freight cars, auto parts boxes are assigned to pools based on a mileage formula and often spend most of their time off home rails. In other words, foreign road cars usually out-number home road cars in a given parts train to the point that if you missed the locomotives passing, you would have a hard time telling whose train it was.
