Prototype Information:

Introduced by EMD in January 1972, the SD40-2 is one of the most popular diesel locomotives of all time.  Between 1972 and 1989, EMD built nearly 4,000 units.   These 3,000 horsepower machines were found to be more reliable than higher horsepower locomotives, and the SD40-2 became the standard of the industry for several decades.   

There are several variations of SD40-2 in service.  In our 2023 production, we are modeling the original standard SD40-2.  Each model is equipped with our Paragon4 DC/DCC Sound & Control System.

These DC and DCC-Sound equipped locomotives feature the ALL-NEW Paragon4 sound and control system. Each Paragon4 locomotive comes with BLI's own integral DCC Decoder factory installed. Paragon4 locomotives offer Dual Mode DC and DCC operation** with superb back EMF motor control, improved DC motor control, built-in capacitor pack for more reliable electrical pick-up, industry best on-board sound with Rolling Thunder functionality, Pro Lighting Mode for prototypical light control, Switcher model for precise low speed control, recordable DCC operation for automated playback, and the same excellent detail level as Broadway Limited's Paragon3 Series models. Other features of this diesel locomotive include a heavy die cast chassis, smooth-running flywheel-equipped drive, directional lighting, magnetic knuckle couplers. The N Scale EMD SD40-2 can be operated on all DCC systems as well as on standard DC railroads** (with limited sound functionality). It has wheels profiled to operate on Code 55 and larger rail and curves of 9-3/4" radius and larger are recommended.

**Lombard Hobbies Recommendation - As modelers ourselves we highly recommend ONLY running DCC on DCC systems and DC on DC systems, regardless of 'Dual-Mode' capability. This gives optimum performance and safeguards the unit from possible damage from running on a different system than originally intended and from any inexperienced operator errors.
