Atlas Master N 50005597 Extended Vision Caboose Rio Grande #01510
Whether called a cabin, crummy, waycar or hack, the Atlas N Scale Extended-Vision Caboose is based on steel cars that brought up the markers on trains coast to coast beginning in the 1950s. On these cars the cupola featured an extended-width extending past the sides of the carbody allowing crewmembers to see around the taller cars in operation in the postwar era. Extended-Vision Cabooses were common sights on railroads from the 1950s to the 1980s. With the advancement of the End-of-Train device, cabooses slowly began to fall out of favor. However, in the early 2000’s, ‘shoving platforms’ began to appear as a place to safely house a crew when a reverse move was required. Instead of riding on the side of a freight car, the crew member now has a safe place to stand, while guiding the rear of a reverse move. Atlas’ shoving platform cabooses will feature blanked out windows, where appropriate.
