It is the Canadian variant of the EMD SD50 six-axle diesel-electric freight locomotive. Nicknamed the ‘Draper Taper’ after CN’s Chief of Motive Power at the time, it has a full-width cowl body and cab, with a tapered section immediately behind the cab for improved rear visibility. A total of 60 units were built, all for the Canadian National Railway. They saw extensive mainline freight service on the CN network across Canada and in the United States. They were retired by CN in 2008. A total of 4 units were built for the Canadian National Railway. Initially numbered CN 9900-9903, they were renumbered to CN 5500-5503 by 1989. All 4 units were retired by CN in 2017.
